Exhibition: "Ku-kikan", Off the Kerb, Melbourne, Australia
3.11 was an opportunity to reconsider the process of modernization in Japan. After World War II, industry developed and new energy was produced, and the animation culture popular among children was a mirror of the times. 鉄腕アトム (Astro Boy or Mighty Atom), a robot powered by nuclear energy, is a hero. On the other hand, Buddhist statues and shrines are traditional objects of worship for the Japanese. Ideology for economic development is not the same as faith, but it is a powerful force that moves people. What should we believe, and to where should we go back? Now we have to reconsider the issue of modernization and ideology, which is a social issue, but each of us has to reflect on ourselves, which is embarrassing and uncomfortable.
*Home shrine: Usually, it’s hung on the wall in the room to bless the house and family. The card (given from the shrine) is set in it. In this work, a mirror and video monitors were installed instead of cards.
